The Story of Our Bloomers

When I started going to Pune regularly, I watched practitioners wearing yoga bloomers, and each time would try different kinds. Some were plain soft cotton, and others were beautifully batik-dyed with cool designs like mandalas, flowers, and yoga poses. Each time I tried them, my curvy hips looked huge in them. I tried different sizes. They made me look like I was wearing swimming diapers, or the elastic around my string legs would cut I to my flesh like the end of a sausage.

A Friend of mine gave me a pair of bloomers, and I decided I would just wear them around the house. When I began to practice wearing them, I found that I didn’t get as hot as I did with my fitted shorts or leggings. I thought maybe my hot flashes were winding down. They weren’t. The loose fitting material around my pelvis was liberating and cooling. When I started wearing them to teach, I realized I was less worried about see through or even ripping shorts, and much more at ease showing various parts of my legs to my students. Bending down in Uttanasana was more freeing as I felt more comfortable that any wardrobe malfunction wouldn’t happen in my bloomers.

A Brazilian friend came to my classes for help with back pain. She was very stressed, as her husband had just been laid off. She had just started selling leggings she was bringing back from Brazil, and asked if I would sell them at the studio.

Her leggings were very high quality and had great prints. They were a big hit with those who were bored by their bland lululemon leggings. Falling in love with her leggings, I asked her if she could make me some bloomers. We made a prototype, and she suggested we add a pocket. Yogarosa bloomers were born! I told her I wanted to make sure people or the environment would not be harmed.

She herself connected with some women in Brazil who are head of households, and they lovingly made bloomers with fun tropical designs and colors. Our venture ended up helping two immigrant female entrepreneurs and our families, as well as many seamstresses in Brazil. But the biggest beneficiaries are the women who love our bloomers and wear them all over the world. Their practice is dedicated, liberating, and with a little Miami-Brazil flair.
